The Brown Basilisk Lizard

The Brown Basilisk (Also known as the Jesus Lizard) are around us here at the Glades. Sometimes you can see them in our Marina if you are quick! You see, they get their nickname because they can “walk on water”.

I first saw one out of the corner of my eye, lightning fast over the top of the water! I did some research on these lizards and thought they were from Mexico or South America and surprised to see them here. It turns out they are an invasive species. The males reportedly get up to 2’ long, however the longest I have seen here was probably between 12” - 18”. The lizard of course is more active in the warmer weather and The Brown Basilisk is not something you will see everyday, but if you pay attention you probably will.
